Gerald T. McCarthy Insurance Agency is proud to bring the state-of-the-art Distractology 101 tour to Salem High School! Salem high Students are encouraged to take this program to understand the dangers of driving and the unneccesary dangers of driving while distracted. Distractology 101 is an interactive program developed by the Arbella Insurance Foundation to teach new drivers the dangers of distracted driving. Unfortunately, we live under the assumption that it’s OK to drive around with cell phones stuck to our ears, texts flying and burgers balanced on the wheel. Here’s the cold, harsh truth: it’s not OK.

Join park staff from the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on a Spring  afternoon to watch a great FREE film on the big screen in the comfort of the visitor center auditorium!  Wall-E (Single-Disc Edition) () is the story of a trash compacting robot tasked to help clean up the mess left behind on Earth by humans after a planet-wide evacuation due to overpopulation and pollution. Come join Wall•E on his mission, that leads him to a companion who aids him in bringing humans back to Earth to restore the environment.

Join a ranger from the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge for a behind the scenes tour of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Tour will be conducted via refuge van, with several brief “drive by” stops along the way. The tour will present an “up close and personal” look at the refuge through the multiple lenses of the cultural history of Plum Island and the Great Marsh, native wildlife and their habitats, and the role of refuge management in the conservation of these precious natural resources. Participants may be driven along areas on the refuge otherwise closed to the public.

If you are expecting, or are considering starting a family, Anna Jaques Hospital invites you to a Birth Center Open House and tour. By attending, you are able to meet the obstetricians, gynecologists, certified nurse midwives, maternity nurses, pediatricians, neonatologists and family practice physicians who are available to take care of you during your pregnancy and after your baby is born. This will help you find the physician or midwife with whom you feel most comfortable. Once you have chosen your provider, you can begin scheduling the prenatal visits necessary for a healthy pregnancy. All physicians and midwives who deliver at the Anna Jaques Hospital Birth Center are board certified.

 

Celebrate Spring's Vernal Migration at Ipswich River Sanctuary Topsfield!

Each year on the first warm rainy night of spring, wood frogs and mole salamanders begin a mass migration to vernal pools where they breed. If you happen to be out on one of these evenings, the experience can be spectacular. Tonight, a part of the sanctuary will be transformed into a Big Night scene. Participants will take a one-hour guided walk along the Vernal Pool Trail, where they will meet some interesting characters who will share some facts and stories about themselves, vernal pools, and this special time of year.

 

Bring the kids and learn how to build a bluebird house at Mass Audubon's IRWS

Celebrate spring by building a bluebird house with your child. We’ll supply all the materials and instruction to build a nest box for bluebirds and tree swallows. These wonderful nest boxes also attract chickadees, tufted titmice, house wrens, and woodpeckers. A short slide presentation will introduce families to the natural history and behavior of birds in Massachusetts, and we’ll discuss where and how to place your nest box. Dress for the weather because we will take a short walk to look and listen for bluebirds.

Newburyport YWCA invites parents and caregivers to the 2015 YWCA Engaging Communities Luncheon featuring Clinical and Consulting Psychologist Kelly Champion, PhD ABPP, and Honorary Chairperson Ann Ormond, President of the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce & Industry.  The luncheon will spotlight “Anxiety, Stress, Depression and Generation Z”, and discuss the unique characteristics of raising this generation of children whose experiences are colored in every way by their experience as the first “true digital natives” of the technological world.

Walk on the Wild side with Harbor Seals at Joppa Flats Education Center!

Come to Joppa Flats Education Center and begin with a 45 minute indoor introductory program in the Lookout (second floor) about Pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walrus). Then, we’ll carpool to an on-the-beach viewing area where we can see the harbor seals hauled out on the rocks at low tide at the mouth of the Merrimack River.

 

Crabgrass Puppet Theater returns to the Firehouse Center for the Arts in NBPT.

From Crabgrass Puppets comes two funny folktales from Africa with stunning puppetry, spectacular scenery, and wonderful music! Koi and the Kola Nuts is a humorous tale from Liberia. The youngest son of a chief is cheated out of his inheritance; instead of his father’s riches he receives just one small kola nut tree. He sets off to make his fortune.
